Men’s Bomber Jackets & Flight Jackets

WHAT IS A BOMBER JACKET?

Bomber jackets feature a snug collar, long sleeves with cuffs, and an elastic waistband for a fit that seals in heat. Leather, suede, wool, nylon, or other insulating fabrics and materials are commonly used. Bomber jackets are sometimes referred to as flight jackets.

HOW SHOULD MY FLIGHT JACKET FIT?

These jackets have a distinctive look, where the cuffs sit on your wrists and the waistband is at the waist. They’re shorter than other military-style outerwear but are very good at keeping heat from escaping.

HISTORY OF THE BOMBER JACKET

The first bomber jackets appeared during World War 1 and were designed to keep pilots warm during flights in open-air cockpits. Leather and fur provided effective insulation for early aviators whose planes were engineered for war rather than comfort.

The first standard flight jacket, the A-1, was produced by the U.S. Army in 1927. It featured many of the specifications we associate with bomber jackets today, including a tight knit waistband and cuffs. Further designs included the A-2, B-3, and B-15. Even after the days of open-cockpits had passed, military pilots still had a need for warm jackets as their aircraft flew to higher altitudes.

Dobbs Industries (now Alpha Industries) created the popular MA-1 bomber jacket in 1948 and it went into service the following year. Made with nylon, wool, and polyester, the MA-1 was a lightweight jacket that provided insulation from the cold but could also be worn in warmer climates.

The MA-1 made the leap from military-issue outerwear to civilian favorite during the post-war era. People who had never flown a sortie could still appreciate the flight jacket’s comfortable and flattering fit, effective insulation, and practical pockets.

STILL FLYING HIGH

Today, Alpha Industries manufactures the CWU-45P and CWU-36P for the U.S. Department of Defense, along with military-style outerwear for civilians.

What started as a jacket to protect airmen from the elements has become a must-have for men looking to showcase their style while keeping warm. Shop a variety of men’s jackets at Alpha Industries, including water-resistant and reversible bomber jackets.
